Our Medical Missions for Underserved Communities in Rural Guatemala

As part of our mission to ‘Promote Health in the Community’ we have supported a range of humanitarian projects in Latin America, from training the RED CROSS (Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ecuador), training Fire & Rescue Teams in Wilderness Medicine (Guatemala) and supporting the government and NGOs during natural disasters (landslides, floods, volcanic eruptions).

Our core focus is bringing local stakeholders and international volunteers together to support an underserved rural village in Southwest Guatemala. Since 2012, together with local partners and international healthcare professionals, we have supported the community with:

  • Primary care clinics

  • Vaccination clinics

  • Health & hygiene initiatives (dental hygiene, water treatment and mosquito-borne disease prevention).

Funded by the SOS founders, proceeds from the sale of our coffee, volunteer fees and donations, we coordinate with local community leaders to provide sustainable medical missions. Continuity is ensured by regular community liaison, information from the Ministry of Health and our own clinic statistics.

International healthcare professionals (HCPs), supported by our local staff, bring essential knowledge and skills to each mission. From EMTs, paramedics and general practitioners, to dental surgeons, travel medicine specialists and gynecologists, everyone has something to offer. The clinics serve as excellent continuing professional development (CPD) for HCPs, with opportunities to learn about the local epidemiology, tropical medicine and cultural considerations, whilst providing quality care for our patients, overseen by our Guatemalan Medical Director.
